In Memoriam: Dr. Gabor B. Racz
It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of Dr. Gabor B. Racz.
Dr. Racz was a legend, well-loved by all who knew him. He was a pioneering physician, instrumental in shaping the field of interventional pain medicine. A force of nature, Dr. Racz authored hundreds of publications, invented dozens of devices and procedures, and taught countless physicians around the world. It is estimated that he performed over 70,000 interventional pain procedures across his 62-year career.
Patients fortunate enough to visit with him in our clinic met a thoughtfully probing and uniquely kind physician. They were evaluated thoroughly, advised on a treatment plan, made well again, and all the while regaled with life stories about water polo or of Hungary before—or after— the 1956 revolution.
Dr. Racz and Dr. Chavda were a unique pairing. Dr. Racz generously shared his long-cultivated wisdom and was a mentor and friend to his younger protege. They shared a spiritual connection, strengthened by a common passion for opera, history, and perfectionism. Above all else, they loved their patients.
In person and in spirit, Dr. Racz guided the clinic from its inception three years ago. The Virtuoso Spine & Joint family—staff and patients alike—feels Dr. Racz’s unfillable void. We will perpetuate his legacy by continuing to care for patients safely and effectively and by always putting the patient’s interest above all else.
Dr. Racz will be remembered for his warm, echoing legacy of generosity toward the world. He is survived by a remarkable family comprising his lovely wife, four children, and thirteen grandchildren, and by his fellows and trainees—and their trainees generations hence. The Gabor Racz Advanced Interventional Pain Conference held annually in Budapest will celebrate its 28th year this August.
